Calcium Absorption

The first and most basic step in increasing available calcium is adequate consumption; the second and most overlooked step is actually absorbing the mineral product within the gastrointestinal tract. Several factors in the diet may limit the absorption of calcium. Phytic acid, found in significant amounts in grains, binds to calcium and greatly decreases the gut’s ability to absorb it.241,242 The absorption of calcium within the gut is also reliant on maintaining a healthy intestinal tract. Gluten and lectin, which are generated from grains and legumes such as beans and peanuts, damage the lining of the intestines by triggering inflammation that impairs absorption.

Studies also reveal that higher levels of serum vitamin D lead to drastically increased amounts of calcium absorption.243 In those with inflammatory bowel disease, inflammation bouts are associated with lower vitamin D levels.244 According to research data, physicians frequently overlook vitamin D depletion as the cause of osteoporosis,245 probably because they overemphasize calcium and its presence (or lack thereof). A diet high in grains or low in vitamin D renders futile any attempts to maintain adequate calcium levels, regardless of one’s consumption habits.
